Confidence and respect vital keys to cup success

- JASON GIBBS jason.gibbs@thechronicle.com.au

RUGBY: The O’Callaghan Cup is at the centre of the fierce and passionate rivalry between Downlands and Grammar.

For more than 70-years the two schools’ rugby teams have given blood. sweat and tears to enjoy the honour of holding the cup aloft each year.

And yet despite all the history, tradition and sacrifice, there is no animosity or disharmony between the two schools.

Respect, honour and mateship are the values both schools’ rugby programs value the most.

The Chronicle spoke to both First XV captains earlier this week and three things were clearly evident.

Both teams wholeheartedly believe they can win the match, but at the same time they understand the importance of respect for their opposition.

Last year Grammar dominated large portions of the game and yet Downlands won thanks to a late Mac Grealy try.

As “defending champions” they are aware Grammar could do the same to them this year. ALEC MCKAY – DOWNLANDS CAPTAIN SAID: “I THINK WE’RE BUILDING TO SOMETHING REALLY BIG.

“Over the last few weeks we’ve been gaining momentum and fine tuning our game plan.

“The whole team believes in what we’re doing and we’re confident.

“We believe we can win but at the same time we accept we have to respect Grammar.

“We have to be ready to play out the whole game.

“They’re a great side and we know it’s going to be tough.

“We just have to be ready and take our chances when they come our way.”

HAMISH MULLER – GRAMMAR CAPTAIN SAID: “WE HAD A MEETING MONDAY AFTERNOON TO LOOK INTO THE HISTORY OF IT (THE O’CALLAGHAN CUP) AND WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

“Anyone who has uncles, grandparents or fathers who have played know all about the history and tradition and how much it means to both schools.

“Everyone has put in a lot of hard work.

“Heaps of work has gone into this season and now we’re excited to be able to get out and play some rugby.

“Our focus now, though, is on our team, our preparation and what we need to do to be ready for Saturday.”
