CHECK OUT THIS ‘ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE’

AN architectural and engineering masterpiece is steadily taking shape in Fletcher St, high above the Toowoomba Connection Rd as it traverses the range at Redwood.

Dubbed “Cliffhanger”, award-winning Toowoomba builder Valdal Projects is currently working on its most challenging project to date.

Designed by Brisbane’s Joe Adsett Architects, the home has a number of unique features – the most obvious of which will be the 30m of continuous windows and doors with no structural blocking elements that will run the length of the building, taking in uninterrupted views of the Lockyer Valley.

The other striking aspect of the build is the 7m concrete counter lever, which juts out over the escarpment without any form of support.

Valdal Projects director Stuart Valdal said from the outermost point of the counter lever, there was an 8m drop to sloping ground.

It’s what makes the site so special, but also what makes it difficult to build on.

“It’s an extremely difficult and steep block to build on, one of Toowoomba’s most difficult, if not the most difficult site,” Mr Valdal said.

“Most deliveries have to be craned in from the road as the driveway is too steep.”

Mr Valdal said the home was being built exclusively with off-form concrete and steel.

“There’s no lightweight construction … so the building techniques and systems being put in place have required a lot of engineering, thought, and co-ordination between multiple trades and consultants,” he said.

Safety barriers have also been dug so that if anything did fall or roll off the site, it would be caught before hitting the road below.

“There have been many consultant meetings to ensure the best safe practices are being used, and we’re really excited to watch this one come to life,” he said.

The home, when complete, will feature four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a sixbay parking garage, and an infinity lap pool and spa.

Mr Valdal said they were hoping to have the project finished by mid-to-late 2021, after a 15 month build.
