Drugged up hindrance to traffic

- PETER HARDWICK peter.hardwick@thechronicle.com.au

A DRUGGED up woman had wandered about in the middle of Ruthven St on a foggy night for 15 minutes before she was talked to safety by a passer-by.

Kaylene Bernita Vickery, 51, had no recollection of events on the night of February 12 when she had walked among traffic and verbally abused passing drivers, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Solicitor Amber Acreman, of David Burns Lawyers, for Vickery, told the court her client at the time had been using drugs and was not well.

The court heard she had been wandering around in the middle of Ruthven St outside the Shamrock Hotel, calling drivers “f***ing ***** ” and yelling “f*** off you dogs”.

After 15 minutes, a member of the public had coaxed her to the footpath.

Telling police to “f*** off”, she said she had no money and wanted police to give her a lift home, the court heard.

At the watch house she was changing into prison issue clothing when she took a syringe from her bra and threw two clip seal bags with traces of meth onto the floor.

Ms Acreman said her client had been placed on probation just the month prior but that order had not had time to take effect at that stage.

Her client, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, had not been in trouble since, she said.

Vickery pleaded guilty to public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises, being a pedestrian causing a traffic hazard, failing to properly dispose of a syringe and possessing a dangerous drug.

Acting Magistrate Damian Carroll fined her $300 and placed her on 12 months probation to include random drug testing.
