Stabbing case back in court

- PETER HARDWICK

A TOOWOOMBA woman accused of stabbing her 37year-old partner in the chest during an incident at a Harristown home has had her case adjourned to December.

Shyahne Wendy Stevenson was not in Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday for the brief mention of her matters but was represented by solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide of Legal Aid Queensland’s Toowoomba office.

Ms Saldumbide told the court her client was an inpatient of a mental health facility at the moment and her doctor was compiling a psychological report but the defence would also be seeking a medical report of her client.

Ms Saldumbide sought an adjournment so those reports could be obtained before the matter could proceed further.

The 22-year-old Stevenson was charged with attempted murder arising from the alleged incident at a Harristown home about 1am, Friday, January 17.

Shortly after her arrest, Detective Acting Inspector Matt Howard of Toowoomba

Criminal Investigation branch said police would allege Stevenson fled the scene after stabbing her partner.

“He (her partner) was located by neighbours who called QAS and he was transported to the Toowoomba Hospital with a punctured lung,” Inspector Howard said.

“He was in a critical but stable condition.

“Without treatment the male would have passed away.”

It is believed the man had since made a full recovery.

Police claimed the knife allegedly used in the incident had been recovered.

Stevenson has not as yet been required to enter any pleas to the charges which include attempted murder (domestic violence offence), administering a poison with intent to thereby endanger the life of, or doing grievous bodily harm to, the person (domestic violence offence), and assault occasioning bodily harm while armed (domestic violence offence).

Magistrate Howard Osborne remanded Stevenson in custody and adjourned the case for committal mention back in the same court on December 14.
