South Toowoomba downs Coolaroo to take top

- SEAN TEUMA

AUSSIE RULES: South Toowoomba has sounded out a warning to the Allied Pickfords Cup after claiming its biggest scalp of the season.

The Bombers were too strong at Heritage Oval for grand finalists Coolaroo, claiming an 11.13 (79) to 7.2 (44) win.

Coming out of the gates strong, South Toowoomba led at every change throughout the contest, with a dominant third quarter giving them an unassailable 29-point lead heading into the final term.

Coach Nathan Stewart said it was a character-building win, particularly after a tough week for the club, with the loss of life member Pat Gladman.

“It was a great performance. We were undermanned so it adds a bit of character to the club for sure,” Stewart said.

“The club’s first ever life member passed away, and the boys wanted to show him the commitment he deserved so to speak.

“It was tough for a few of the senior boys who knew him pretty well.”

Stewart said a captain’s knock helped the cause, as they prepare for the prospect of a hungry Coolaroo in the finals.

“We’re definitely a fit side, led by captain Bradley Knowles,” he said.

“The stuff he does in the fourth quarter is incredible. He throws himself in and leads from the front.

“It was good to knock off a premiership competitor, but it’s only early, and there’s a good chance of playing them again.”

South Toowoomba moves back to the top of the table on percentages, however Goondiwindi has a game in hand.

Toowoomba looked set to get its first win of the season, before a late push from Dalby denied them at the death.

The Tigers led by 18 at the end of the first and second quarters at Rockville Oval, and were unable to hang on to a nine-point advantage with one to play, falling to the Swans 9.3 (57) to 6.16 (52).

Despite having 10 more scoring shots, inaccuracy in front of goal hurt Toowoomba, with a late Jake Schreiber goal breaking the deadlock with less than two minutes to play.

South Burnett maintained fourth spot with a comprehensive 15.16 (106) to 1.5 (11) victory over Warwick.

The Saints were in control from the opening bounce, with seven goals in the opening term putting the Redbacks on the back foot early.

Robert Goodwin kicked three majors, with Nathan Trace chipping in with three.

SOUTH BURNETT PRESSURES TOP TWO

The Saints have moved into a share of second spot after downing South Toowoomba 1.8 (14) to 0.3 (3).

In testing Kingaroy conditions, Rosie Pyke kicked the only goal of the game in the first quarter, with South Burnett maintaining a safe advantage throughout the contest.

They now move to 12 competition points alongside the Bombers, sitting in third on

percentages.

Toowoomba was back to its best with a surging 5.11 (41) to 0.0 (0) defeat of Goondiwindi.

Leading by just 16 at halftime, a dominant three-goal third term saw the Tigers put the game out of reach.
