TWO Darling Downs Year 6 students have been nominated to become the Queensland Fred Hollows Junior Ambassador.

Gabby Riley from Cecil Plains State School and Clayton Sternes from Dalby State School are both in the running.

The chosen ambassador will also receive the Fred Hollows Humanity Award which honours children for their kindness, compassion and integrity.

Gabby Riley was nominated for her role in establishing the Girl Guides in the Cecil Plains community.

Gabby’s mum Erin Riley said Gabby had attended Guides in Charleville before they moved to Cecil Plains.

“She reached out to her Charleville Guides leader who was doing it by distance education,” Ms Riley said.

“We have eight girls now who log on and do it by distance ed.”

Cecil Plains State School teaches Auslan to its students, and Gabby has taken what she has learned at school to help teach other Girl Guides Auslan via distance education.

Clayton Sternes was nominated for his tireless work in the community.

Clayton has played the trombone and the piano at the local nursing home to entertain the residents.

He also volunteers at the Dalby State School breakfast program to help students who are vulnerable.

Clayton come from a farming background and has lobbied about the importance of water conservation at his school during the drought. For more information or to nominate, visit www.hollows.org/ fredhollowshumanityaward
