Trump’s all guns blazin’

-

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has set the stage for what he called “the most important election in the history of our country” by formally accepted the Republican nomination for the US presidency.

In a rally-style address at the White House, speaking from a flag-draped stage in front of 1500 supporters on the South Lawn, Mr Trump (pictured) painted a nightmare scenario if he was not re-elected.

He warned that a vote for Joe Biden would put the future of the country in hands of the Democratic Party’s far-left wing.

“If the left gains power, they will demolish the suburbs, confiscate your guns,” he said.

The President said he was the only one capable of leading the US to recovery from the pandemic and the current social unrest.

“Despite all of our greatness as a nation, everything we have achieved is now endangered,” he said.

“At no time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies, or two agendas.

“This election will decide whether we save the American dream, or whether we allow a socialist agenda to demolish our cherished destiny.

“Your vote will decide whether we protect law-abiding Americans, or whether we give free rein to violent anarchists, agitators, and criminals who threaten our citizens.

“Joe Biden is not a saviour of America’s soul. He’s the destroyer of America’s jobs – and, given the chance, he will be the destroyer of American greatness.”

As Mr Trump spoke, hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the White House, some performing a mock execution of the President beneath a guillotine. More than 50,000 Black Lives Matter protesters were set to march in the city on Friday, local time.

The President was introduced to the stage by Ivanka Trump, who defended her father’s unorthodox style.

Describing him as a Washington outsider who “knows what he believes and says what he thinks”, she drew cheers of “four more years” from the crowd.

“Dad, people attack you for being unconventional but I love you for being real,” the first daughter said.

“America doesn’t need another empty vessel … now more than ever America needs another four more years of a warrior in the White House.”

As well as defending his record, Mr Trump also promised to “crush” COVID-19, swearing there would be a vaccine by the end of the year.
