Defiant Jack a stable marvel
Brumby Jack’s idea of a spell is a nap in the tie-up stalls, and the old marvel showed no signs of slowing down.
The eight-year-old collected his sixth career win from 69 starts in the Living Turf Benchmark 58 Handicap (2150m).
Taking up a midfield position in the run, the well-supported Brumby Jack ($2.60 fav) launched a powerful finish in the home straight, running past Ultimate Power ($5) inside the final 50m, and holding off Poolenzo ($7.50) to score by a short-half head.
“That was his 20th start this preparation, and every time we send him around he collects a cheque,” trainer Ken Jones said.
“He loves the 2100m at Toowoomba. He’s struck some wet tracks of late and doesn’t like them at all.
“He appreciated being back on top of the ground, and he just keeps going. Jason Lyon rode him well. He’s a very good rider.”
Jones said he would continue to target the distance events on Saturday evenings at Clifford Park with the gelding.
Riding honours across the seven-race program were shared between three jockeys.
Lyon added to the Brumby Jack success with Tequila Boom ($21) taking out the opener.
Apprentice Adin Thompson
finished with a double, starting with drifting favourite She’s Crowned ($3.30) and completed with Ryano ($11).
Les ‘Bubba’ Tilley backed up four winners last weekend with a treble on Saturday night, guiding Proud Roc ($4.30), Mossfair ($2.90) and Roke ($1.70 fav) to victory.
Mossfair was the beneficiary of a hot tempo upfront and a peach of a ride to break her maiden in the TAB Maiden Plate (1300m).
Tilley guided the four-yearold to the fence from an outside draw, as a number of horses contested the lead throughout the early stages.
Making the move at the 500m, Mossfair quickly put paid to her rivals, scoring by 5 ¾ lengths for Tony and Maddysen Sears.
Tilley then denied the training partnership a race-to-race double, with Roke edging out Sonic Arrow ($3.30) in the Moore Lewis and Partners QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap (1200m).
After being eased out of an early speed battle, the Michael Nolan-trained first starter took a position behind the leading quartet.
Just as Sonic Arrow looked to pinch a break at the top of the home straight, Roke battled strongly to the line, eventually wearing down the leader to score by a short head on the line.
