SOCIAL ENTERPRISE CLEANS UP

- MATTHEW NEWTON matthew.newton@thechronicle.com.au

IT LOOKS a bit like a Dalek – one of the infamous extraterrestrial mutants from cult science fiction show Dr Who – and while this particular machine is also on a mission to exterminate, it’s got germs squarely in its sights.

Toowoomba social enterprise Ability Enterprises has unveiled its new, state-ofthe-art cleaning machine, capable of disinfecting and treating an area of up to 20,000 cubic metres.

The almost decade-old social enterprise offers a number of services to the community, including maintenance and cleaning.

The business prides itself on being proactive, and CEO Tracey Scanlan said it was back in February as COVID-19 began impacting people’s lives that they started to think of ways they could adapt to help.

Ms Scanlan said the machine worked by ionising liquid, spreading a fine mist to cover an area that could be as small as 500 cubic metres to as large as 20,000 cubic metres.

“It will hit any pathogens on any surface, whether it be on top or under a table, and it breaks down the pathogens – so it actually kills the nucleus of the pathogen.

“It’s different to normal disinfectants because by killing the nucleus of the pathogen, no resistance builds up.

“More than ever, it is vital our communal areas are regularly cleaned with COVID-19 continuing to spread.

“This fogging method offers a quick and simple solution that can give people peace of mind.”

To make things even easier, the fog disinfectant safely breaks down by itself, and does not need to be wiped off.

Ability Enterprises currently employs 67 staff and Ms Scanlan said the majority of them either had a lived experience of mental health issues or came from a disadvantaged background.

The company provides meaningful employment opportunities to marginalised individuals living in regional Queensland and deliver a quality and consistent service to their customers.

It lists QBuild and Toowoomba Regional Council among its key clients.
