AMBER’S FIGHT FOR LIFE

- ALEXIA AUSTIN alexia.austin@thechronicle.com.au

FOUR years ago, Amber Walker battled and overcame acute myeloid leukaemia – but now she is fighting the deadly illness again.

Ms Walker, who was raised in Clifton, is currently at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital having undergone a stem cell transplant last Friday.

Her longtime friend, Sophie Lamont, who met Ms Walker in Clifton, hopes to give her a helping hand.

“In June or July, (the illness) came back and unfortunately it’s a lot worse than it was the first time,” Ms Lamont said.

“She’s the biggest sweetheart, she will literally put anyone above herself – she’s not had a lot of opportunities in life where people have put her first.

“The transplant process means she and her partner will be out of work for at least a year for recovery and caring duties.

“With COVID-19 around and her being immune compromised we are hoping to raise enough money to support her in the way she needs with assistance in transportation, medical supplies and personal safety equipment to leave the house safely during this time.”

Ms Lamont said the pandemic had also placed added stress on Ms Walker, who was unable to see her carer while in the hospital.

“She can’t get her carer to come to the hospital nor can she get any staples because she can’t leave her ward,” Ms Lamont said.

“She’s pretty unwell at the moment with the radiation and the transplant, but we’re hoping she’ll feel a bit better in the coming weeks.”

Ms Lamont helped her friend start a GoFundMe page, which aims to raise $15,000 to provide Ms Walker with a car and medication.
