Best of the weekend

-

THE CHRONICLE were out and about at the weekend – looking out for the region’s top athletes and teams. Here’s our latest top five.

ALEXANDER EDWARDS (FOOTBALL)

The Gatton Redbacks striker put Highfields to the sword on Saturday.

Edwards notched up a hattrick in 35 minutes and had five goals to his name an hour into the game.

With his side well in control, Edwards opted against padding out his stat line.

After scoring his fifth goal, Edwards subbed himself off to give younger players in his side some valuable game time.

SARAH SHERIDAN (FOOTBALL)

Sheridan is enjoying a rich vein of form in front of goal this season.

The Rovers midfielder (pictured) scored both goals in her side’s 2-0 win over Willowburn, taking her total to 10 goals in 9 games.

MADELEINE WISHART (HORSE RACING)

The apprentice had a strong book of rides coming into the Clifford Park meet on Saturday night, and she didn’t disappoint.

Wishart had six rides, resulting in victories aboard Tabard

and Zamosa, a second placing, two thirds and a fourth.

HOLLY GILBAR (HOCKEY)

Gilbar continued her hot goalscoring form with a hat-trick against Rangeville at the weekend.

She has formed a dynamic partnership in the forward line with Savannah Trapp this season, helping the Hawks to a 6-1 record and the best scoring rate in the COVID Cup.

WADE AUSTIN (RUGBY LEAGUE)

Austin played a big role in keeping the Tigers composed as they picked up their second win of the Volunteers Cup season against West End.

He set up the last 80m try for Blake Lollback to help Southern Suburbs get over the line, making a big impact from the centre position.
