Toowoomba Speedway back with a bumper return to the track

-

Tomorrow night Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway swings back into action with night one of the 2020/21 speedway season.

Lochie McHugh signed with a new team this summer and broke the lap record two weeks ago during a practice session to 10.46sec.

When Robbie Farr left the team earlier this year East Coast Pipelines racing crew chief Nick Speed, approached McHugh and asked if he would be interested in driving the car.

“We have been watching him for awhile now in his family car. I like his driving style and aggression,” Speed said.

McHugh jumped at the opportunity.

“It was too good of an opportunity not to say no to and with the Queensland Title in Brisbane on October 3 and it’s a good opportunity to defend my Queensland Title,” he said.

“I am looking forward to spending a full season at Hi Tec Oils Speedway.

“I haven’t been able to do that because of World Series Sprintcar commitments.”

Erhart Motorsport team driver Cody Maroske said the practice sessions have built up anticipation.

“It’s fantastic to see such a quality at the Field of Sprintcars nominated for the weekend. We had a good night of pre-season testing two weeks ago and we were just off Lockie’s lap time,” he said.

“It’s the best way to get the season started, especially with the Queensland Title in Brisbane

in October.”

Five time Australian V8 Dirt Modified Champion Kevin Britten is on the nomination list being joined by Toowoomba drivers Nick Whell, Scott Genrich and Nathan Black.

Production cars will also be hotly contested on Saturday night with Amy Evans keen to start off the season where she finished.

Evans was leading the championship when COVID-19 stopped her chance of winning.

“I was devastated, actually the last round rained out so it was rescued and that’s when COVID came along and stopped everything,” Evans said.

“It’s hard for a girl to be competitive and I feel as though it’s taken me a one in a hundred year effort to win it and a one in a hundred year pandemic stops me, so I’m looking forward to Saturday night and having another year at the championship.”

The program also features Formula 500s, Street Stocks, RSA Sedans and Junior Sedans.

Under COVID restrictions tickets sales are limited and people are encouraged to prepurchase tickets.

The pit area is completely separated from the General Admission area. Anyone who purchases a pit pass, must remain in the pit area.

The main program starts at 6pm with racing from 4.45pm
