A RESIDENTIAL care facility for people with disabilities has been approved by the Toowoomba Regional Council.

Applicant SandSky Developments can now move ahead with the plan to build four specialised units on Berry St in Wilsonton.

According to the assessment report by planning officer Nadia McLeod, the four units each feature a breakout room to meet current disability design standards.

“Units one and two will have three bedrooms of which two of the bedrooms will accommodate two residents, and the office/overnight area (OOA) will accommodate an overnight nurse if required,” her report said.

“Units three and four will have two bedrooms of which one bedroom will accommodate a resident and the OOA will accommodate an overnight nurse if required.

“The units will each have a ‘breakout room’ which is used as a calming retreat area as per the requirements of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) specialist accommodation design standards.

“Each unit is provided with a shared communal living and kitchen area, with access to a covered outdoor area and yard.”

The council requested further information from the applicant after it was submitted earlier this year, including details on the site’s earthworks and retaining walls, stormwater drainage and waste bin storage.

The applicant responded to all the requests.

Ms McLeod recommended the proposal be approved, attaching about 80 conditions.
