Bees matter

A JAPANESE professor worked with engineers to successfully develop a technique for pollinating pear fruit flowers in Japan using soap bubbles delivered by a drone.

A US professor developed a miniature robotic bee. These research projects are to address the decline in bee populations around the world.

Surely this is misguided, as we need research backed by legislation to focus on and address the cause, not the symptom.

Bee killing pesticides and a host of diseases along with global warming and intensive agriculture are the primary causes.

Bayer’s insecticide focus is only on the “B” for bottom line and this corporation shows no concern for this worldwide decline.

My son used to have two images on his desk downloaded from the web. One showed a world without people and featured abundant forests brimming with wildlife and birds. The second was headed a world without bees and was a desolate wasteland.

I wonder if we will ever get the wisdom to treat all nature with respect. DOUG HARLAND, Toowoomba Tesla ride

I HAD my first ride in a Tesla Model 3 last Friday night.

My good friend Luke Terry, the social entrepreneur who created the Vanguard Laundry and is now based in Brisbane as CEO of White Box Enterprises, a social enterprise creating jobs for 5000 young people, took me out to dinner in Fortitude Valley and picked me up in this amazing car.

Boy can this car accelerate quickly, it’s like being in a fighter jet.

Everything is computer controlled. Once you sit inside one, you will never go back to an internal combustion engine. Still a way off affording one for myself though.

I was in Brisbane staying the night at Brisbane Skytower in Margaret Street on level 72, quite a view of the city from up there, it overlooks the Botanic Gardens.

DAVE FREDERICKS, Toowoomba subhead lead

DP of Glenvale is mistaken. David Janetzki has been engaged in considering how to make laws tougher since he became rep for Toowoomba South.

I know this because I’ve had discussions with him about youth crime since that time.

I don’t agree with a number of his proposes, but the purpose of this letter is to correct a mistaken point of view printed in this column – Mr Janetzki’s focus on crime and penalties preceded the attempted break-in to his car by several years.
