McHugh a winner in return to speedway

SPEEDWAY: Lachlan McHugh has his name in the books after claiming the first sprintcar post-COVID event at the Toowoomba Speedway.

Twenty cars lined up for the start of the 30-lap main event, capping off an eventful night in the return to racing.

In a race with stoppages, McHugh managed to maintain his composure throughout the contest, fending of multiple charges from Luke Oldfield.

With six laps to run, Cody Maroske had passed Allan Woods into third, while up front, McHugh ran the highline to clear the traffic and won the feature race from Oldfield and Maroske.

“We really wanted to make a statement tonight I think we did, we didn’t change the car a lot tonight. Full credit to the crew,” McHugh said.

Oldfield paid tribute to McHugh for his drive.

“Lachie did a great job tonight first night with a new team he is going to be tough to beat this year,” he said.

In the production car feature race, it was Joel Berkley that came out on top.

Starting at eighth and moving into fourth in the space of a lap, before making his move and hitting the front with handful of laps remaining, going on to win the race from Adrian Stott and Chris Evans.

“That was a cool racetrack tonight, but I don’t know what happened to Amy (Evans),” Berkley said.

“She was going well. I was running around the top for a few laps and then the bottom of the track and I just couldn’t get past her.”

The next Speedway Meeting at Hi-Tec Oils Speedway is an all Open Wheel Night featuring Sprintcars, Speedcars, Compact Speedcars Formula 500s and Micro Sprints on October 10.
