TRL, Mustangs formalise U18s, 21s partnership
RUGBY LEAGUE: A formal link between the Western Mustangs and Toowoomba Rugby League has been established as both push forward into 2021.
In the move, the TRL will look after operations administration of both underaged sides, featuring a subcommittee of TRL, TJRL and Mustangs representatives.
With the Intrust Super Cup bid for 2021 put on ice by Queensland Rugby League due to COVID, the Mustangs are hoping to push forward with a united front as they look for inclusion in the future.
Michael Burns, who has assumed the role of chairman following the resignation of Frank Martin, said having the backing of the Mustangs from the Toowoomba league community was vital.
“It’s important that our club competing in the QRL’s elite competitions has the backing of the rugby league community across Toowoomba and the southwest which means the Western Mustangs formally joining forces with the TRL is a boost for our club and the talented players coming through,” Burns said.
“The TRL Board is supportive of what the Mustangs are trying to achieve with our under-18s and colts, as well as our aim to play in the ISC, so we’re looking forward to working with the TRL to provide elite opportunities for our region’s talented players.”
TRL chairman Rex Zeeman said the hope is that this ensures elite league talent remains in the region moving forward.
“It was discussed at a TRL delegates meeting in August and there was no objections,” Zeeman said.
“We saw it as an opportunity to bring the two together. The Mustangs and TRL had always been adjunct of each other, where we should be embracing and working together.
“It’s a good chance to look after them and make sure the pathway exists for players in the region to go to higher levels.
“We’d like them to stay in the region and when they’re not required (at Mustangs level) to play at a local club, whether that’s in Toowoomba, South Burnett or Roma for example.”
With the Hastings Deering Colts (U21s) season lasting considerably longer than the
Mal Meninga Cup (U18s), Zeeman said incorporating the games with TRL fixtures would provide benefits for both parties.
“An ideal situation is when the U21s have to play standalone games, if a way could be worked out to fit them in with the TRL draw,” he said.
“It would give the Mustangs more support, and give more people the chance to enjoy the high quality of that league.” MUSTANGS SUB-COMMITTEE
