South Sydney attack ‘the best it’s ever been’
SOUTH Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds has hailed the Rabbitohs’ red-hot attack the best it has been in his nine seasons at Redfern.
The Bunnies are charging after piling on 106 points in wins over the Roosters and Newcastle.
Reynolds has been a part of some scintillating Souths teams since joining the club in 2012, including a premiershipwinning side featuring Luke Keary and Greg Inglis in 2014.
But the diminutive half believes the current crop of Rabbitohs are the most potent attacking team that he has played alongside.
“It is probably up there with the best that it (our attack) has ever been,” Reynolds said.
“In previous years we had great attack, but we haven’t had a plan B or C.
“But if things don’t go right these days, we can quickly flick the switch and that is something that we have learnt over the last couple of years.”
Reynolds revealed how he and halves partner Cody Walker had simplified their games following Latrell Mitchell’s season-ending injury.
He says coach Wayne Bennett has encouraged the pair to use their football instincts.
“Wayne is just encouraging us to get together and play some footy,” he said.
“He loves it when we link up together and challenge the opposition. Our structures allow us to do that and it is great, free-flowing footy.
“It is good to just jump wherever you want and play a bit of eyes-up footy.
“I’ve changed the style I’m playing with, and Cody is flowing a lot more out the back on both sides of the field.
“It (the freedom) has been there all year, but it is just a bit different with Latrell going down. He is such a dominant figure, and we are just trying to re-work our attack and find new ways to break teams down.
“If that means popping up on the other side of the field, then that is what we will do.”
Rabbitohs hooker Damien Cook has benefited from his team’s attack, especially when he runs the ball.
Cook credits his side’s impressive form to coach Bennett instilling confidence in players to execute the game plan.
“We are playing some good footy, and I think it is down to everyone knowing their job,”
Cook said.
“Our forward pack is doing a great job, and they are getting us on the front foot.
“We understand the game plan and we have spine meetings each week and we execute on the field.”
Cook reserved praise for Reynolds – who is a standout despite not attracting the big headlines like Walker.
“Cody is getting a lot of the credit for scoring some tries, but the work that Reynolds does on the inside holding the defensive line up has been unbelievable,” he said.
