Big names return for Rangers

-

BASEBALL: The Toowoomba Rangers are set to launch a three-pronged attack on this year’s GBL competition.

The Rangers will field three sides this season, spearheaded by their division four side looking for redemption from last year’s disappointing conclusion to the year.

President Darryl Luchterhand said the increase in player numbers was encouraging for the season ahead.

“We’ve picked up quite a few new players and some returning to the club as well,” he said.

“Especially considering we struggled for two teams last year. We’ve added a few guys that have never played before.

“One has moved down from Cairns where he played, another from Townsville has been in Toowoomba and has decided to play again.

“All of our new players are pushing hard for a B-grade spot, which makes clubs very strong.”

The Rangers A-grade side was primed for a grand final showdown with Wests before the season was cancelled, and Luchterhand said a number of big-name inclusions will again have them in a position to challenge for a title.

“One of our imports in Brian Hipps is back,” he said.

“Brent and Phil Vandernuet were looking like having a season in Canada, but they’ll be here.

“Bryce Thomson has come over from the Southern Stars. He’s a very handy acquisition for us and he can swing the bat.

“Laurie Taylor will probably be our number one pitcher. He threw better than Sam last year. That’s no disrespect to Sam who had a great year, it just shows how good Laurie has got.

“Ardy (player-coach Luke Ardill) is excited, as am I as president. Not only is our Agrade strong, but the flow on effect is there as well.”

The Rangers season gets underway this Sunday with a double header at Commonwealth Oval from 9.30am, with B-grade vs Windsor and Agrade vs Pine Hill at midday.
