Trainers podium Wilson Medal
Squair and Nolan recognised at prestigious awards night
RACING: Toowoomba trainers have been well represented at the prestigious Wayne Wilson Medal evening in Brisbane last week.
Recognising the best training performances in Queensland for the 2019/20 season, locals Michael Nolan and Barry Squair came away with honours on the night.
Squair was given the December award after his mare Love You Lucy was successful in the $125,000 Summer Provincial Series Final at Doomben.
She then went on to claim the Listed Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast, before a career best performance to win the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm.
Nolan claimed the March award with Kisukano’s success in the $500,000 QTIS Jewel at the Gold Coast, famously defeating champion juvenile Rothfire in the process.
The training partnership of
Toby and Trent Edmonds took out the overall medal, with Squair finishing as runner-up and Nolan in third for the season.
Squair said he was overjoyed with the achievement, paying tribute to the efforts of the wonder mare.
“That was great to finish runner-up,” he said.
“It wasn’t something I was really expecting, but I was in it with some hope.
“She jumped over whatever hurdle we put in front of her, and hopefully there’s more to come.”
The awards continued on Monday night with the announcement of the Queensland Thoroughbred Awards.
Baylee Nothdurft swept the jockey’s awards, claiming the Queensland jockey and apprentice of the year, while Tony Gollan was named trainer of the year.
Spirit Of Boom, who currently stands at Eureka Stud in Cambooya, took out the stallion of the year and champion two-year-old stallion.
