CULTURE KEY FOR DIRECTOR

- JASON GIBBS

Culture will be a key focus in Peter Dein’s push to strengthen Toowoomba Grammar School’s cricket program.

Dein, who recently called time on his Queensland Premier Cricket career with the Sunshine Coast Scorchers, joins the prestigious school as the new director of cricket.

“It’s exciting, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous as well,” he said.

“But I’m a lot more settled now compared to two weeks ago when I first set foot on campus.

“It was tough leaving the Scorchers, but with an exciting opportunity like this there was no doubts.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to getting stuck in.”

With Grammar cricketers padding up in multiple school, junior and senior competitions, Dein plans to develop and strengthen pathways to opportunity and success.

“One of the things we really improved over the past few years at the Scorchers was our culture,” Dein said.

“We did that by instilling some behaviours that matched the way we wanted to play and the way we wanted to behave and act at training.

“That’s something that while I have only been here for two weeks and the culture is already great I’d like to improve.

“I think if you look at all the best teams at any level, wether it be Test level or under-8s on a Saturday morning the team needs to get along and gel. You need to know what needs to be done to make each individual perform at their best.

“And I think that comes down to culture again.

“You can have the best team on paper, but if there’s a toxic culture you won’t be able to perform.”
