Reds skipper is back on the Wright track

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

LIAM Wright is on target to captain Queensland in next month’s Super Rugby AU final after being recalled to the Reds’ starting line-up.

Having returned from a long-term ankle injury via the bench in Queensland’s laststart 24-22 win over the Brumbies, Wright (pictured) will start for the first time this season when the Reds visit HBF Park to meet Western Force tonight.

It’s the last chance for Queensland players to push for a starting berth in the May 8 final at Suncorp Stadium.

Wright’s return means he will take over the captaincy from fly half James O’Connor, who has filled in admirably as skipper during the 23-year-old skipper’s absence.

“Liam will start this week for the first time this season and will resume the captaincy,” Reds coach Brad Thorn said.

“Special mention to James who has proudly led this group for the past seven matches — he’s done a great job.”

The first-placed Reds didn’t lose under O’Connor’s leadership. Maintaining their perfect record tonight is important to the Reds despite the Queenslanders having already secured hosting rights for the final.

The Force can guarantee themselves a semi-final berth by beating the visitors.

“It’ll be a good challenge against the Force,” Thorn said.

“They’re coming off a good win and will have a big crowd there.

“They’re playing for a spot in the finals and both sides will be putting it all out there.”

Wright, whose return to the starting 15 has led to Angus Scott-Young shifting to lock, isn’t the only Wallaby recalled to Queensland’s run-on side, with centre Hunter Paisami and winger Filipo Daugunu to also play from the opening whistle.

The Force will be boosted by the return of Irish star Rob Kearney from an adductor injury.
