GET READY FOR TOP RACING IN THE COOL

- ZILLA GORDON

ONE of Rose City’s most treasured events, the Warwick Picnic Day Races, is ready to make its anticipated return this weekend, but with a chilly forecast on the way attendees will need to bring a jacket.

Owner of Cooper’s Menswear Andrew Cooper said with a chilly 15C forecast for Saturday there had been a rush on jackets.

“We’ve had men coming in buying sports jackets and women looking for a trench coat,” Mr Cooper said.

“A lot of men have also been buying scarfs.”

Colour wise, Mr Cooper said women were sticking to monochromes and black-andwhite schemes, but had also seen people opt for rich caramel tones.

At women’s boutique Classic Dimension, retailer Chris Cooper said women had been stopping by to pick up gloves to keep warm trackside.

“We’ve also got some lovely headbands in,” Mrs Cooper said.

The bejewelled headwear was an alternative to the classic fascinators, Mrs Cooper said.

Mr Cooper said wool hats had also been popular this year.

For those wanting to nab the perfect accessory to their raceday outfit, Mrs Cooper advised against waiting too long, with stocks selling fast.

Those feeling they have put together the perfect look will be able to compete in fashions on the field when it kicks off at 11am.

Warwick Turf Club secretary Kristen Doyle said it was great to see the event back on after navigating months of uncertainty, with even a dance floor on offer this weekend.

She said racegoers must prepurchase tickets online and gates open 11am on Saturday, June 19.
