Extra help vital to city’s big NRL plan
THE benefits of hosting another NRL match would be immeasurable for the local game, according to the Toowoomba Rugby League.
It would provide both an immediate and long-term boost as the TRL looks to grow the game in the region.
Unfortunately, there may be too many hurdles for the region to negotiate – but that won’t stop the region’s powerbrokers from trying though.
“It’s very obvious everyone would love to see Toowoomba host another NRL game,” TRL secretary Tony Coonan said.
“And I have no doubt the game would be well supported by the fans.
“Having a game here would be great for the region, local rugby league and plans to form an Intrust Super Cup team in the future.
“Unfortunately a lot has to be done to make it happen.”
An August 8 clash between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers is on the cards after the ARL sent its requirements, which includes 10 criteria points the host city needs to meet to lock in the game, to the city’s key stakeholders last Friday.
Mr Coonan believes help from outside the region is key to securing any game.
“We feel some significant help from the State Government is needed,” he said.
“We’ve proven we can do it with the St George Illawarra Dragons and Gold Coast Titans game in 2018, but we need that extra help, be it logistically or other to make it happen again.”
The mere fact a game is on the cards is a positive that should be celebrated, according to Mr Coonan.
“Peter V’landys’ comments are a real positive,” he said.
“The fact it’s even being contemplated is great.
“The easy option would be just to play all the games at Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
“But the fact Toowoomba is being discussed shows the NRL at some level wants to promote at the grassroots level which is good.”
Toowoomba Regional Council and the Chamber of Commerce are currently continuing negotiations with the NRL.
