Seven things learnt from TRL round 13
RUGBY LEAGUE: Defence went out the window with a scoring bonanza across the competition.
These are the seven things we learnt from round 13 of the TRL Premiership.
VALLEYS QUIETLY STAY IN TOUCH
They haven’t drawn the headlines of the top three, but the Roosters women are quietly going about their business.
They improved to 4-5 for the season with a big win over Dalby, and they’ve shown enough promise in patches to trouble teams in the finals.
BOARS EXPLODE AWAY IN SECOND HALF
Goondiwindi is proving nearimpossible to stop on its home turf, and it’s got plenty to do with how they finish games.
They piled on seven second half tries as their classy backline took full control against Brothers, giving them their second-straight weekend of reaching 50 points.
GOOD GATTON HAWKS SHOW UP
We spoke last week about Gatton needing to find their consistency, and they turned in their best effort of the season to down Wattles at home.
It keeps them well in the hunt for a top-five berth, and now they’ll really need to back it up on the road to Valleys this weekend.
TURNBULL SPARKS VALLEYS
In his second Valleys outing this year, Travis Turnbull showed why his best puts him in the frame as a leading custodian in the league.
He settled in well for the Roosters, as well as scoring a try and booting a perfect seven goals to cap off a very solid afternoon.
HIGHFIELDS PUSHING THE BENCHMARK
Four straight competition wins and a mid-season trophy has continued a memorable period for the Eagles.
They really put the foot down against Southern Suburbs to post 62 points in another win, and look simply unstoppable in the process.
COWBOYS BACKS STATE THEIR CASE
They boast some of the best backs in the TRL, and the Cowboys got full use out of them at Oakey.
Mitch Watson showed his versatility with a strong game at the back in the absence of Craig Donn, with wingers Jake Speed and Tyrelle Ross continuing their impressive seasons.
POINTS FLOW ACROSS THE LEAGUE
Spare a thought for the scorers across all six games who’ll need to put their wrists on ice.
A total of 414 points were scored at an average of 69 per contest, with an incredible 76 tries posted.
It was enthralling for the neutrals, but it’s fair to say a few mentors will be working on defence this week.
