NEWTOWN WELL POISED FOR THE RUN HOME.

- SEAN TEUMA

HOCKEY: Newtown is slowly starting to peak in the run home to the Toowoomba A1 finals.

With all teams completing two full rounds of competition, Newtown is comfortably positioned in third after a 4-0 defeat of Rangeville.

“We’re in a decent position, and we’ve got Rangeville again this week,” player-coach Matt Siebuhr said.

“Over the next few weeks we want to improve from that game.

“It’s a funny spot to be in. I think our basics are just a little off where the top two teams are.

“We’re starting games slow and it’s something we talk about. That’s our biggest thing to work on in the next few games.”

The Tigers had four different scorers in their comfortable win over Rangeville.

Two goals came from penalty corners, something Siebuhr said he was pleased with as they look to continue their strong finishing.

President’s Cup champions Red Lion moved back to top spot on goal differential after a 7-1 defeat of Past High.

An explosive start saw them score all of their goals inside the opening 37 minutes, with Corey Guse scoring a hat-trick.

RED LION WOMEN CLOSE IN ON LEADERS

Red Lion moved to within four points of the top of the standings after a late 4-3 win over Norths.

A fast start saw Red Lion post back-to-back goals inside 10 minutes, before Norths was able to work its way into the contest.

Norths had a 3-2 lead heading into the final term, before late goals to Emma and Tess Henare edged Red Lion clear.

Newtown was able to hold onto a 1-all draw with Past High in the other women’s fixture.

They struck first with Ebony Panzram, before Erin McCurley-Ault’s penalty corner just after halftime proved enough to split the points.
