Mum’s brawl with ex’s partner
A WARWICK mother who punched her ex’s new partner in the head during a violent brawl on a busy street has claimed the fistfight was driven by months of pent-up conflict.
Dusty-Lee Grant and her husband were outside Rose City Shoppingworld on Grafton St about 2.30pm on July 26 when they first ran across the other woman and her mother.
Warwick Magistrates Court heard the victim’s mother shouted something to Grant across the street, which provoked the 30-year-old enough that she launched herself at the other woman.
Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan said Grant punched the victim in the head several times before the mother pulled her off and turned on her instead.
Sergeant Wiggan said the pair continued to fight until Grant’s husband and bystanders intervened, with all involved escaping the brawl uninjured.
“She claimed the victim often yelled abuse at her and her husband around town, and she was sick of it,” he said.
It wasn’t Grant’s first time before the courts for assault, with the mother-of-four’s criminal history also including drug offending.
Defence lawyer Phillip Crook contended the brawl was the explosion of months of conflict, sparked when the father of one of Grant’s children called her from jail to inquire after his child. Mr Crook said the contact upset the man’s new partner, who started sending Grant texts saying she was “going to smash her” and yelling abuse at her around town.
Grant pleaded guilty to one count of common assault. She was fined $1000.
