TOOWOOMBA PUT TO TEST IN FINAL

- JASON GIBBS

SOFTBALL: A team-first focus and trust helped drive Toowoomba all the way to the Queensland under-16 girls softball grand final.

The Garden City team was unable to beat a well-drilled Redlands outfit, but they pushed their opponents all the way in the decider. Coach Kirsty Prouten heaped praise on her side after a gruelling championship campaign.

I’M EXTREMELY PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY GIRL IN THE SIDE – THEY WERE FANTASTIC. KIRSTY PROUTEN

SOFTBALL: The ending was not the one they imagined, but Toowoomba “wrote their own story” at the Queensland under-16 girls championships.

Toowoomba’s grand final clash with Redlands was their third straight game in the sapping Brisbane heat on Monday and ultimately one challenge too many.

“Redlands deserved to win the final, they were the better team in the moment,” Toowoomba coach Kirsty Prouten said.

“Our girls pushed them all the way though and we went down swinging.

“I’m extremely proud of each and every girl in the side – they were fantastic.”

Toowoomba booked their spot in the decider after beating Brisbane Red in a demanding double header.

“They (Brisbane) have a lot of state representative players in their team,” Prouten said.

“We did really well to beat them.”

A team first mentality and squad unity was the key to Toowoomba’s success during the championships according to Prouten,

“Before the tournament we talked about writing our own story as a team,” she said.

“On and off the field it was about team work.

“We wanted the girls to work hard for each other, trust one another and believe.

“They did exactly that and it was a big part of our success.”
