Jezza’s best yet to come: skipper

- JOSH BARNES

A FIT and firing Jeremy Cameron still has improvement in him after a complete summer on the track so far, according to Geelong skipper Joel Selwood.

The star goalkicker is only “touching the sides” of his extraordinary talent after taking part in every session of preseason so far and Selwood can see another level in the leftfooter.

The former GWS spearhead has been one of the best forwards in the AFL for the past decade, booting 466 goals in 186 matches.

In a stellar career with the Giants, he led the club goalkicking for nine straight years, was named an All-Australian twice and won the 2019 Coleman Medal, but Selwood said the best could be yet to come for the 28-year-old.

“He’s an exceptional talent and I think he’s only just touching the sides on the sort of player he can be,” Selwood said.

“We’ve seen him from afar for so long up at GWS and understood that he was a very, very good player. It’s when he’s in your backyard and you see it day-to-day and out on the training track, that you really have an appreciation that he can do a lot of things that other players can’t do.”

Although he kicked a solid 39 goals in 15 games in his first season at Geelong, Cameron sputtered through the 2021 campaign as he dealt with hamstring issues.

He has had a chequered recent history with injuries but averaged 20 games a season in the six years before 2021.

Selwood said the matchwinner appeared to have put his fitness problems behind him so far over the summer months.

“He has been going really well, to be honest. I don’t like singling out (individuals) this time of year, but he hasn’t missed a session,” Selwood said.

“He actually had a really good off-season too, when he was around here. He loves jumping in the car and taking off over the border and whatnot, but he wasn’t allowed to (do that) this year.

“It’s been nice that Jezza’s got a good block of training and may that continue.”
