Young woman pinned in wreck
A WOMAN is being treated for serious leg and face injuries at the Toowoomba Hospital after she crashed into a tree at Clifton early Friday morning.
Emergency services were called to the incident on Clifton Leyburn Road about 5.25am.
They found the 20-year-old woman trapped in her car with her legs pinned.
Her car had been partially wrapped around a tree.
The initial reports suggested she lost control after swerving to avoid a bird which was later found lodged in front of the vehicle
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the rescue crew released the woman’s legs by about 6.10am but it took another 10 minutes to get her out of the vehicle.
Paramedics stabilised the woman before loading her into the rescue chopper bound for the Toowoomba Hospital.
A police investigation is under way.
The serious crash comes after QPS Superintendent Garrath Channells made an urgent plea for motorists on country roads to drive with care following fatal crashes in St George and Injune in the first week of January.
“Every decision you make on the road counts.
“Please, slow down, share the road, rest and revive and most importantly I hope that all road users arrive at their destination safely and without incident.”
Six lives have been lost on Queensland roads since January 1, two more than the same time last year.
Superintendent Channells said everyone shared the responsibility of road safety.
“It is important to understand the dangers of driving on rural roads, where there are often long distances between towns as well as numerous hazards, such as: heavy vehicles (road trains), wide loads, agricultural equipment, and wildlife,” he said.
