Waving knife at cop ends in jail term

- PETER HARDWICK

BRANDISHING a large knife at a police officer while shouting obscenities has earned a Harlaxton man a two-month jail term.

However, Brandon Mollet walked out of Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Wednesday after Magistrate Louise Shephard ordered he be released on immediate parole.

Police prosecutor Anita Page told the court police called to an incident at a Harlaxton address on the afternoon of March 30 had arrived to find Mollet in the front yard brandishing a knife.

Telling the police officer to “**** off”, the 24-year-old approached the police car and tried to open the driver’s side door which the senior constable had locked, she told the court.

He had continued to brandish the knife while repeatedly telling the policeman to “**** off” before a neighbour tried to calm him down and Mollet had gone back inside the house.

The Tactical Crime Squad arrived soon after and arrested Mollet inside the home where they also found a small amount of cannabis, a pipe for smoking the drug and the knife which was 25cm in length with a 12cm blade, Ms Page told the court.

A police search of the same dwelling on April 14 had found a small amount of cannabis and a water pipe for smoking it, she said.

Mollet had then failed to appear in court on April 25, the court heard.

Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to going armed to cause fear, possessing a dangerous drug and utensils and failing to appear in court.

His solicitor Phil Stainton told the court his client had a history of mental health issues and his finances were controlled by the Public Trustee.

Noting Mollet had eight pages of criminal history, Magistrate Louise Shephard also fined him $600.
