TOOWOOMBA and the surrounds are spoiled for choice when it comes to events.

Whether you want to celebrate Christmas in July or check out Side Show Alley at a local show, there’s something happening in the region for all members of the family to enjoy. Here are just 10 of the events to check out in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs this weekend.

1. Gatton Show

Check out all the excitement of the Gatton Show when it returns to the region this weekend.

From petting zoos, workshops and market stalls, to rides and Side Show Alley, there will be something for every member of the family to enjoy. Running from 8am to midnight on Saturday, the event is hosted by the Gatton Show Society.

2. Christmas in July picnic

Nestle in beside a toasty firepit and enjoy a glass of mulled mine or spicy marg this Sunday. Toowoomba events and function venue Bunnyconne­llen is hosting a picnic to embrace the fresh air of the high country hamlets and celebrate Christmas in July.

Vendors the Chef’s Lab and Platter of Fact will be serving food all day and local musicians will also be performing live.

Don’t forget to wear layers and bring your own rug, blankets and pillows. Gates open on Sunday at 11.30am. Ticket prices vary and can be purchased online at bunnyconne­llen.com.au

3. Shibori workshop

Make a statement this weekend by creating your own stylish fashion item. Learn the art of Shibori – a Japanese tie-dying technique used to create beautiful and unique patterns on material, at this beginner’s workshop hosted by Imprint Corner. Participan­ts will also be taught different skills including pattern making, binding, stitching, folding, twisting and compressin­g.

If making a scarf doesn’t take your fancy, attendees can choose to make their own pillowcase or linen bag instead.

All materials will be provided. Running from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday, the event will be held at the Laurel Bank Park Hall at 50 Hill St. The cost of the workshop is $90. To purchase tickets, visit imprintcor­ner.com.au

4. Steam up Saturday

Hop on board the historic steam engines at the Downs Steam Tourist Railway and Museum this Saturday, between 9am and 3pm.

Food, coffee and soft drinks will also be available to purchase on the day. Entry is a $5 donation.

The museum is at 16 Cambooya St, Drayton.

5. Paint session

Create your own masterpiec­e at the Sip Studio this weekend with the choice of a 7pm session on Saturday or 1pm workshop on Sunday.

The sessions are strictly for adults only and include all art materials. Participan­ts are permitted to bring their own alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages and nibbles, but are required to arrive 15 minutes early. Sessions are $59 per person and the tickets can be purchased online at thesipstud­io.com.au

6. Ladies Long Lunch

Enjoy a fun day out with the special women in your life when the Dalby Leagues Club holds its annual ladies day event.

Designed to celebrate all the incredible women who make a difference to the club, the event will be attended by wives, girlfriend­s, mothers, volunteers and friends.

This year, guests will be treated to an Italian feast with delicious canapes, decadent mains and an assortment of cheeses, deli meats and sweet on offer.

Wash it all down with a selection of specialise­d cocktails, wine and beer. The long lunch will be on Saturday and runs from 12.30pm to 7pm.

7. Sister circle

Connect with like-minded women in a safe space when the Toowoomba Sister Circle holds its monthly event at Bloom Hollistic on Ramsay St. Activities will include a guided meditation, journaling, energy balancing and story sharing with the main goal being to connect with other women.

The Embrace Your Inner Winter event will be held on Sunday, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

8. Volleyball tournament

Cheer on the UniSQ Volleyball Club Toowoomba team as they take to the court in this inaugural volleyball tournament at the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre.

The Fridge on the Ridge tournament will run on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 3pm.

9. Live music

Support the local music scene this Saturday night when Ethan Bielefiled and the Cool Nights Big Band take to the iconic live music venue The Powerhouse Toowoomba. Covering the genres of jazz, pop, rock and swing, patrons are encouraged to dance the night away and enjoy a cocktail or two from the onsite bar. Food will also be available to purchase until 7pm.

Doors open at 5.30pm.

Take your pottery skills to the next level with an advanced two-day wheel throwing workshop.

The intermedia­te class is suitable for students with basic knowledge of wheel work and will cover a range of pieces including cups, pots and bowls, among others.

Hosted by the Darling Downs Potters Club, the class will be held on Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 4pm. Materials, tea and coffee will be provided, but attendees are required to bring their own lunch and snacks. Tickets are $350 and can be purchased online at toowoombap­otters.club.
