Brown’s selfless act to help out kids

- MARTIN GABOR

all heroes wear capes, but some wear footy boots.

Parramatta’s Dylan Brown isn’t alone when it comes to NRL stars helping out charity, but he hopes his recent act of kindness can inspire other players to donate money to help out those in need.

The Eels five-eighth was asked to appear as a guest on Fox League’s Sunday Night with Matty Johns but wasn’t overly keen.

A chat with Tamara Jawad, the club’s PR and public affairs manager, changed his mind and helped him turn the appearance into an opportunity to help out Ronald McDonald House.

“I just second guessed it and thought I wasn’t too keen,” Brown (pictured) said.

“But she said that she thought I should do it, so I said ‘all right, how about they double it? And if they do, I’ll give it all to Ronald McDonald House’.

“I’m an ambassador there and I frequently give them money, so whenever I can help out, free money is pretty good. You can’t say no to that.

“Fox were awesome. They jumped straight onto it. I talked to the producer there and he said it was amazing. I’m grateful that they could jump on the back of it as well.”

Brown famously bleached his hair blond last year as part of a challenge that raised more than $10,000 for Ronald McDonald House.

The Eels have had a longstanding relationship with the charity. Brown and other playNOT ers regularly visit The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to cheer up sick kids.

His philanthropic approach to life stems from how he was raised, and he hopes other players starting giving back to the community or the media starts to share their stories more often.

“We never went without, but I saw my parents work hard and give stuff to us,” he said. “Now that I’ve grown up, it’s time for me to give back to them.

“They don’t take anything from me – they wouldn’t take a dime – so I look to other places to give it back. Anyone else who was in this financial position would do the same, I’m sure.”
