Teenager, 14, released from hospital
A TEENAGER has been released from hospital five months after he suffered a sickening injury when the stolen car he was travelling in rolled in a horror crash that killed his friend.
The 14-year-old boy suffered a critical head injury and was transported to the Brisbane Children’s Hospital’s intensive care unit on June 20.
He was placed in an induced coma but has made a steady recovery.
His father said the boy was released from hospital on Friday and was staying at the Ronald McDonald House as he still needed regular treatment.
“We don’t know how long he will be there, hopefully we will get an update next week” the father said.
“He is speaking, he is eating. “His left side is moving a bit while his right side is 100 per cent working or moving.”
Despite the long road to recover, the father said he was relieved to see his boy pull through.
“Somehow he managed to survive,” he said.
“It was a very horrible accident.
“He realised his mistakes and what has happened, he has learnt a lesson, that is what he has telling us.
“I have been telling him something like this was going to happen, and then it did.”
The boy was one of four teens heading west on the Warrego Highway in a Holden Commodore sedan when it left the road about 8.30am on June 20.
It rolled several times before coming to a stop near the Henningsen Road intersection.
Keyhill Gibbs, 13, suffered extensive critical injuries and died in hospital the next day.
Two other boys, both aged 14, were charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle and had their matters dealt with in the Toowoomba Children’s Court.
The Commodore was stolen from a Kingsthorpe home on June 19.
Police have never confirmed who the driver of the stolen car was.
