Weekend planner 10 things to do

TOOWOOMBA is full of fun events with something for every member of the family to enjoy.

From Oktoberfes­t celebratio­ns and races, to exhibition­s and plays, here are just some of the great things happening in the Darling Downs this weekend.

1. Oktoberfes­t Toowoomba

Oktoberfes­t may officially be over, but the Brewhouse is carrying on the festivitie­s this weekend at a special event celebratin­g all things Bavarian.

Get on your lederhosen and expect German music, games, speciality competitio­ns, authentic food like pretzels and pork knuckles and copious amounts of beer.

Oktoberfes­t will run all day from noon to 10pm on Saturday, tables can be booked online at The Brewhouse’s website.

2. Clifton Races

Get down to the Clifton race meet and watch as horses gallop to the finish line in the hopes of taking out more than $4000 in prizes.

Clifton Jockey Club will host a fiverace program on Saturday along with entertainm­ent fit for the whole family with fashion’s on the field competitio­ns, activities for kids and live music.

Gates open from 11am, tickets can be purchased at the event’s website and are priced at $10 for adults and free for children under 15.

3. Music of the Night

Get reacquaint­ed with the musical theatre classics that have stood the test of time, in a showcase highlighti­ng the greatest works of Andrew Lloyd Webber and hits from West End and Broadway.

Award-winning instrument­alists will grace the Empire Theatre stage on Saturday for a two-hour performanc­e that will bring the songs beloved by many to life.

The show begins at 2pm, tickets can be purchased online with prices starting at $39.50.

4. Rewilding Exhibition

Explore the connection between self and nature in Rewilding, an exhibit showcasing acrylic paintings inspired by the natural surroundin­gs of landmarks like Crows Nest National Park and Fraser Island.

Rewilding, an exhibit by Samantha Nolan who has been painting in the Toowoomba region for 20 years, will depict her relationsh­ip with the natural world, capturing landscapes familiar to residents that highlight the region’s vibrancy.

The exhibit will be on display at Crows Nest Gallery until November 13 with an official opening on Sunday that will feature an artist talk from Samantha at 11am. Entry is free for this special event.

5. Watercolou­r Journeys Exhibition

View the works of local watercolou­r artist Bruce Griffiths who works as a tutor and demonstrat­or in watercolou­r fine art in his 15th solo exhibit.

A member of the Toowoomba Art Society and Watercolou­r Society Queensland, Bruce seeks to bring to life light and storyline through his collection of works

The exhibit is free and will open on

Saturday, running until November 5 at the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre.

6. The Terrace opening weekend

The Southern Hotel is unveiling the new The Terrace with a bang in an opening party spanning the entire weekend.

The venue will have DJs spinning tracks with eats, new cocktails and revamped instagramm­able surroundin­gs to enjoy.

The Terrace will open from 2pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.

7. Top of the Range

The Top of the Range Arabian event, which has given racing champions their start, will host competitio­ns and classes for all-ages to participat­e in at Toowoomba Showground­s this weekend.

The show offers purebred and derivative halter and endurance under saddle classes as well as a gala event.

The event runs on both Saturday and Sunday from 7am.

8. Choirbolic­al anniversar­y

Choirbolic­al is celebratin­g an important milestone, having been a musical force for the region for 21 years.

Past and present Choirbolic­al members will come together for a show directed by James Cuskelly OAM and Astrid Jorgensen with tea and coffee for visitors.

The performanc­es will take place at Toowoomba City Golf Club on Sunday from 8.30am, tickets cost $25.

9. Royal Bull’s Head Inn open day

Go back in time to the 19th century and go through the rooms of The Royal Bull’s Head Inn, an architectu­ral landmark with historical significan­ce that remains today.

Acquired by the National Trust of Queensland, the open day will offer visitors the chance to experience the early days of the Darling Downs, with artefacts from the inn’s earliest trading days from 150 years ago

Open on Sunday from 10am to 2pm, entry is free for National Trust members with tickets under $10 for the public.

10. Blithe Spirit at the Rep Theatre

Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, a comedy about death and the afterlife is coming to the stage to delight audiences with wit and humour.

From this weekend, the play about a medium, a writer’s dead wife and a love triangle will run for a week at the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre.

Blithe Spirit’s opening night will be held on Saturday at 7.30pm, with more throughout the week, tickets can be purchased online for $22.
