HELLO HALLOWEEN

- WITH LEIGH PAATSCH

With Halloween season about to peak, here’s where you can swiftly stream some recent horror hits that will have you appropriately chilled from start to finish …

SCREAM BINGE, FOXTEL, PARAMOUNT+ or RENT ★★★

The recent return of the Ghostface killer to the tormented town of Woodsboro puts up a better fright than many would expect. While the mysterious masked psychopath teases, torments and terminates a new generation of victims (all linked to casualties from past Screams), this gleefully reckless reboot finds good reason to recall franchise foundation players such as Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

X AMAZON PRIME or RENT ★★★1/2

A top-notch exercise in terror, endorsed by none other than the great filmmaker Martin Scorsese. An adult film crew shooting on a remote farm in West Texas has chosen the wrong location for their latest fleshy opus. The property’s 90year-old owners (a retired sharecropper and his ailing wife) do not take kindly to strangers stripping off on their home turf, and decide to do something about it. Stars Mia Goth, Martin Henderson.

ANTLERS FOXTEL, DISNEY+ or RENT ★★★1/2

A genuinely haunting horror movie that revels in the slightly suggested, rather than the directly depicted. In a drug-ravaged town, a young boy (Jeremy T. Thomas) is showing up at school the worse for wear. No one seems to notice the bad way this child is in, with the exception of a new teacher, Julia (Keri Russell). There is definitely something going wrong at this kid’s address, but the truth is a world away from Julia’s first assumptions.
