Toowoomba Grammar athletes will look to shine at the GPS Track and Field Championships

- JASON GIBBS

ATHLETICS: The GPS Track and Field Championships are a hotly contested affair.

Every year some of Queensland and Australia’s best young student athletes push themselves to their limits in the pursuit of glory.

In the 104-year history of the interschool championships Toowoomba Grammar has claimed three titles – 1945, 1971 and 1972 – and has always been competitive on the individual front as well.

Five Grammar students hold GPS athletic records – including current high jumper Dom Seaby.

Seaby sent the 12-years high jump benchmark last year when he cleared 1.62m.

“It felt really good to set the record,” Seaby said.

“I knew it was a record before I started my run up but I didn’t think about that.

“I don’t think a lot before I jump. I do all my thinking about technique and things like that when I’m practising.

“That way I can stay calm and focused when I’m jumping in competition.”

Setting the record was an impressive feat for the young jumper, but it’s not where his “season” ended with Seaby going on to clear 1.73m later in the year. Seaby sits alongside some elite company with 2022 Commonwealth Games discuss gold medallist and Australian Olympian Matthew Denny holding three GPS track and fields championships records.

Denny set records in the discus in three consecutive years – 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Another name familiar to Grammar and Toowoomba sports fans also features on the record list.

During his time at Grammar Steve Glover was known for cricket and basketball prowess.

Glover’s Open shot put record has stood for more than 20 years.

When contacted by The Chronicle the former Toowoomba Mountaineers star was surprised to discover his 19.11m throw, set in 2000, still stands.
