New chief steward found in backyard
THE search for a new chief steward in Queensland is over, with young stipe Josh Adams set to take over the coveted role.
The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission announced Adams’ appointment on Thursday, saying the 35year-old will take over from acting chief steward Dan Aurisch immediately.
After announcing a global search following Peter Chadwick’s departure in September, QRIC found Adams in their own backyard, working for them since August 2019.
Starting as a cadet steward in New South Wales, Adams cut his teeth under the likes of Ray Murrihy and Marc Van Gestel, who has recently taken up the top job in
Hong Kong. Previously a senior steward in the Rockhampton area, Adams made the move to Brisbane 12 months ago to work under Chadwick and Aurisch and is the acting deputy chief steward. The grandson of Harold Park stalwart Keith Adams, Adams said it was a lifelong dream to be appointed to the top job.
“This is my dream stewarding job and I’m extremely honoured to have been given this opportunity,” he said.
“I’ve been around racing all my life and humbled by the opportunity and can’t wait to lead the team through this exciting period of change.”
QRIC commissioner Shane Gillard said Adams was the right man for the job, after concluding a comprehensive search following Chadwick’s departure.
Adams is currently chairing the Birdsville jigger stewards’ inquiry into jockey Ric McMahon and trainer Todd Austin. Neither McMahon or Austin have been charged by stewards. The inquiry will continue next week.
