Marcia Hines

Singer, TV personality

- Fashion editor ANNABEL FALCO

Any woman who mixes Sportsgirl with a little Fendi gets my fashion vote! Superstar Marcia Hines opens up her wardrobe to reveal a very “real” but fabulous collection of clothes where bold lines, jeans and Diane von Furstenberg keep her looking stylish.

Marcia’s fashion choices are as much about comfort as they are about flattering silhouettes and bold colours, with a mix of thrift and designer wear curating her signature standout look.

How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic.

Who are your style icons?

I think Victoria Beckham is pretty amazing. Lady Gaga, my cousin Grace Jones (of course) and Gwen Stefani.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe?

A T-shirt that I bought (that still fits) when I went back to Boston when I was a kid.

What are your favourite brands?

Anything by the late and great Carla Zampatti, Linda Jackson (Linda taught me how to dress back in the day), Jason Branston and Diane von Furstenberg. And you can find great bits and pieces in stores like Sportsgirl, Dotti and Zara.

Have you ever made a style faux pas?

I came up in the ’70s. Who didn’t!

What’s the most you have spent on an outfit?

In the early ’80s I had a dress made in LA to wear for the Queen of Pop Awards, totally hand beaded, and it would be the most I’ve spent on one outfit.

What is the most surprising thing in your wardrobe?

My never-ending collection of jeans (one of my favourite pieces of attire – they can be dressed up or down).

Top three wardrobe must haves?

A good bra, comfortable shoes and nice pashminas.

What is the most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

The patched jeans I wore in the musical Hair.

Summer or winter fashion?

One of the reasons I love Melbourne is that women dress so well down there – the colder climate helps, and there’s more to wear. Brisbane on the other hand is the perfect place for bright, light and wonderful designs and prints.

Casual or cocktail?

Casual because it comes with comfortable shoes!

Handbags or shoes? I’ve got a couple of really expensive bags and a great many more shoes so I’ll say shoes.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Imelda Marcos taught me everything I know about shoes.

Best designer fashion purchase this year?

A bag by Fendi.

Best bargain purchase this year?

Too many to mention because I love thrift shops.

Three beauty products you can’t live without. Soap, witch hazel and a good foundation, I’ve been using a Burberry one. My beauty tip is to never go to bed without removing your make-up.

Velvet Rewired, Brisbane, until Dec 4
