STYLISH SEND-OFF AS STARS HONOUR PIONEER OF PUNK

-

LONDON: Fashion royalty and some of the entertainment world’s biggest names turned out for a memorial for the late designer and godmother of punk, Dame Vivienne Westwood.

Singer Bob Geldof, supermodel Kate Moss, and actors Helena Bonham Carter and Elle Fanning were among those gathered at London’s Southwark Cathedral on Friday, local time.

Westwood, 81, died in December “peacefully, surrounded by her family”, according to a statement released at the time.

“Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better,” her representatives added. “She led an amazing life.”

Others in attendance at the private ceremony were her close friends and fashion notables including Bianca Jagger, Twiggy, and US and British Vogue editors-in-chief Anna Wintour and Edward Enninful.

Speeches were given by Westwood’s widower, designer and creative director of Westwood’s selfnamed brand Andreas Kronthaler and Westwood’s brother Gordon Swire.

Bonham Carter gave a eulogy that was accompanied by a performance from Nick Cave, and Westwood’s son Ben, among others.

The fashion, of course, paid tribute to the designer in its own way. The dress code for the service was full of Westwood’s mischievous, rebellious spirit: “If in doubt, dress up.”

Moss’s daughter Lila wore a studded beret and heartshaped purse of Westwood’s creation, and Victoria Beckham donned a highnecked, fitted black gown, walking side-by-side with designer Marc Jacobs in a pearl necklace and pointed silver stilettos.
