1455 Death of Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro), Dominican friar and Italian painter, known for his Last Judgment at Orvieto and his contemplative frescoes in Florence.
1564 Michelangelo Buonarroti, 88, Italian master painter, sculptor and architect, dies in Rome. He was famed for his painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and his sculpture David.
1833 William Ullathorne, English cabin boy turned missionary, arrives in Sydney as vicar-general of the Catholic Church in Australia.
