GREAT EXPECTATIONS IN A QUEST TO BE TOP DOGS
THERE are expectations at Belmore this season that this Canterbury team will improve dramatically, not just slightly. And Bulldogs fans will expect to see that improvement straight away. Club boss Phil Gould is trying to build a premiershipwinning side. It sends a clear message to players – deliver or they won’t be part of the long-term plans.
BACKS
Jacob Kiraz impressed me last year, with Josh Addo-Carr, who is one of the best wingers in the NRL. They’re blessed with quality on the edges. Jake Averillo is a great ball runner, he’s been touted as a fullback but might be suited in the centres. He’s good on his feet and quick. Paul Alamoti caught the attention of the rugby league world because of his reputation at the junior level. Looking at his development physically, he looks like he is ready to play first grade.
SPINE
With only 16 NRL games under his belt, there is still a question mark over Hayze Perham at fullback. He’s impressed Ciraldo enough but is still an unknown at the elite level and only time will tell if the coach made the right call. Kyle Flanagan looks like he’ll get the nod at halfback and he’ll need to show more than last year if he’s to keep that jersey.
Reed Mahoney will be a good signing. It was clear from the trials he’s improved the Dogs around the ruck. In a full season playing at No.6, Matt Burton will be looking to take his game to another level this year.
FORWARDS
Viliame Kikau is the player who can turn the Bulldogs from a battling side to a winning side. He has that presence and has more to his game than just being a hard-running backrower. He can offload and he’s an underrated defender. He can read the danger in attack and shut it down fast. Canterbury isn’t even close to a return of investment on Tevita Pangai Jr, who needs to aim up or risk being shown the door.
