RABBITOHS EMBARK ON THE HIGHWAY TO TRELL

- MICHAEL ENNIS FOX LEAGUE EXPERT

A WELL-BALANCED footy team who should have every motivation to go all the way in 2023 after falling agonisingly short last year. And put simply, any team with the triple threat of Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker and Damien Cook in its team are going to be there when it matters.

BACKLINE

The Rabbitohs boast an exceptional left-edge attack that typically ends with Alex Johnston crossing the tryline. How often have we seen it? Souths have been one of the leading point-scoring teams for a number of seasons because of how lethal their attack is with Walker and Mitchell combining. Without doubt, Mitchell is the key. We saw how much Souths missed him last year when he was out. He is a leader on and off the field, a player who makes his teammates feel 10-foot taller when he’s out there.

FORWARD PACK

It’s a finals-bound forward pack. They have power, leg speed and creativity on the edges with Keaon Koloamatangi the leader of that havoc for oppositions. The only question mark over the Rabbitohs pack is the consistency of the bench and the Bunnies will be looking for a player like Jacob Host to stand up as a real bench weapon.

SPINE

I could sit and watch Walker and Mitchell all night and the growth from Lachlan Ilias from his first year is exciting. I would like to see more of a running game by Damien Cook from dummy-half. When Cook backs himself and is at times selfish, Souths are a far more dangerous footy side. I’m not looking for Cook to run willy-nilly, he needs to pick his moments. His ability to tear an opposition defensive line apart when they get tired is elite. And when Souths have had highly successful season, Cook has had a running season.
