Man in the gun over ammo

I was military: accused

- PETER HARDWICK

A 43-YEAR-OLD man charged with “falsely representing to be a returned soldier” is to plead guilty to all 40 charges against him, except for that one, Toowoomba Magistrates Court has been told.

Peter John Wilhelm Drazic has been held in custody since his arrest in January and was not required to be in court when his solicitor Stuart Percy mentioned his matters.

He initially appeared in court on January 26 after being arrested by police who had turned up at the Highfields house he occupied with a search warrant on January 19.

Police were held at bay for three hours while another man and a woman were holed up inside the home and when police eventually obtained access to the house, officers allegedly found stolen property, dangerous drugs and drug utensils as well as ammunition, improvised explosive devices in the form of molotov cocktails, fireworks and a stun gun.

Mr Drazic has been charged with 40 matters which include unlawfully possessing weapons, possessing explosives, possessing a shortened firearm, possessing dangerous drugs, failing to give statutory declarations, disqualified driving, evasion, unlawful possession of a motor vehicle and “falsely representing to be a returned soldier, sailor or airman”.

Mr Percy told the court his client intended to plead guilty to all charges except the falsely representing as a returned soldier.

“He is a returned serviceman,” Mr Percy submitted.

Mr Percy said his client had significant mental health issues for which he would seek a mental health assessment report to be put before the court and so asked for a longer adjournment so that could be done.

Magistrate Kay Philipson remanded Mr Drazic in custody and adjourned all matters until April 19.
