The First Fleet amasses off the Isle of Wight before sailing for the proposed colony of NSW on May 13.

Two sailors from the First Fleet ship HMS Sirius receive the first land grants of NSW to free men.

Australia’s first lighthouse is completed on South Head. It was ordered by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and designed by architect Francis Greenway.

Jewish bushranger Edward Davis and five gang members hang in Sydney before a crowd. 1872

Iraqi planes drop chemical weapons on the Kurdish village of Halabja, killing 5000 people.

Justice McInerney sentences Neddy Smith to life for the 1987 roadrage killing of Ronnie Flavell.
