Jackson headlines big night of fights

- JASON GIBBS

BOXING: The secret to ‘fight night’ success is a simple one for Brendon Smith.

For more than 30 years, Smith has always focused on three things: exciting matchups, passionate boxers with good sportsmanship and a good venue.

Saturday’s The Big Fights 32 card ticks all those boxes with some of Australia’s best amateur and pro fighters in action.

“The most important thing is having exciting fights,” Smith said.

“Exciting fights between well-matched boxers who are passionate, professional and show good sportsmanship.

“We have world champions fight here (Toowoomba), Tim Tszyu, Paul Gallen and a host of other top boxers have all fought here.

“The thing they all have in common is passion. We pride ourselves on playing a part in making their dreams come true – helping them rise through the ranks.

“The other important thing is a good venue and we’re very local to have a good venue in Rumours International.”

Fight fans will be treated to a number of top match-ups headlined by the Australasian welterweight showdown between Stoneleigh Jackson and Faavesi Isaako.

“This is going to be a big one,” Smith said. “Stoneleigh could create history by becoming the first Pittsworth fighter to hold an Australasian title.

“It won’t be easy though, Faavesi is a big puncher with heavy hands and he’s coming off a knockout win over Jake Wylie so he will have a lot of confidence.”

Fight fans are encouraged to wear orange on Saturday to honour former Toowoomba boxer Brayden Smith who passed away in 2015 after he collapsed following a fight.

Orange was Brayden’s favourite colour.

Tickets are available through the TGW & Smithy’s Promotions Facebook page.
