PARETO STABLE’S NEW STAR

- Trenton Akers

Just days after seeing his best horse Far Too Easy knocking on death’s door, trainer David McColm reckons he might have unearthed one that is the best horse he has had since his stable star burst on to the scene.

The Murwillumbah trainer will bring the highly touted Pareto out of Sunday grade straight into the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m) on Saturday as he looks to aim up at the $1m Magic Millions National 2YO Classic (1000m) later this month.

McColm admits he thought his Stradbroke Handicap hope Far Too Easy wasn’t going to survive a harrowing bout of acute colitis last week, which is set to now see him spend an extended period on the sidelines as he is nursed back to full health.

“Last week was touch and go, for a couple of days I thought we might lose him,” McColm said. “He has turned the corner and in the last two days he is off a drip and eating on his own.

“He has a long way to go, but he is trending in the right direction.

“It will be a while before he is at the races, he lost a lot of weight, so we will give him time to get him back to where he was.”

Pareto couldn’t have been more impressive winning on debut at the Sunshine Coast last month and McColm said it was Far Too Easy’s success on the track that allowed him to buy the horse for $160,000.

“They had a $200,000 reserve on him which was out of our reach, I didn’t want to go to that type of money, but he ended up getting passed in,” McColm said.

“So I went and saw them and we ended up getting him for $160,000, which we don’t usually go to because our budget is about $100,000.

“I said to (fellow co-owner Don Wardlaw) that Far Too Easy had done wonderful things for us, so we decided to go the extra mile.”

Pareto is a $7 chance with TAB.
