Smith hit on the softball diamonds
SOFTBALL: Toowoomba’s Monique Smith is one of eight Queenslanders to be scouted by Softball Australia for a new development program.
The 32-strong under 17 age group competitor was invited to attend a three-day development training camp which serves as the first step into the Softball Australia high performance pathway.
This is then followed by participation at the 2017 international friendship series, a five-day tournament which invites international, state, academy and regional teams to take part in a round-robin style format.
Smith will run out for Queensland at the competition, after what has been a impressive past 12 months for the teenager.
A number of appearances with the state team came after big performances for Warriors White in the Toowoomba Softball competition.
Smith rounded off the season with a grand final victory at the weekend, adding to her growing resume of achievements.
Should Smith impress, a first call up to the Australia squad awaits. She would follow in the footsteps of Dylan Sheehan, Alex Cleary and Nick Moore who made the Australian under 19 men’s team last year.
