Explosive heroics awarded

FORMER police sergeant Adam Pearson has been recognised for his role in securing the blast zone around the Angellala Creek Bridge on the Mitchell Hwy in September, 2014.

Mr Pearson had been off-shift the night a B-double truck loaded with 52 tonnes of ammonium nitrate crashed off the bridge, causing explosions and severely injuring the driver.

Just as he was calling in support to the scene, a second explosion sent debris flying and a shockwave knocked him unconscious.

Believing there could be no survivors, he got himself to his feet and attempted to stop other responders from heading into the explosive area.

His actions earned him a Group Bravery Citation along with other first responders at the scene.

Six Star of Courage, 26 Bravery Medals, 20 Commendations for Brave Conduct and six Group Bravery Citation decorations were awarded yesterday.
