Flavours flare at Felton Fest
Food, agriculture science and region’s best sausages snag crowds
FOOD and family fun were the flavours of the day with thousands enjoying the Felton Food Festival yesterday.
Event co-ordinator Debbie House said while overall crowd numbers were down, people had reported strong interest in the agricultural science displays and workshops.
Traffic congestion was minor, with a new plan in place to keep vehicles moving.
“We did have a reduction in numbers ... we’re looking at between 6000 and 7000 people,” she said.
“It all ran very smoothly and it was a lot more pleasant.”
Rob and Val McMillan made the trip from Brisbane just for the festival and said it was certainly worth the drive, especially to learn how foods were produced.
“I wish the kids could see this (and) how hard the farmers work,” Mrs McMillan said.
The Sausage King and Best Butchers Burger competition regional heat returned for the second year. Queensland Australian Meat Industry Council state manager Rob Mollison said it would be back due to interest and demand.
Hamlyn’s Modern Meats won the traditional Australian sausage and best beef burger while Gibson’s Butchery picked up the pork sausage and gourmet beef burger prize.
Gray’s Modern Meats took out the poultry sausage category with a tandoori chicken offering.
Allora Butchery, Pittsworth Meats and Ashton’s Butcher also won categories. All winners go on to compete at the Ekka.
