Mustangs build for genuine finals push

Two wins have the Western Mustangs in the hunt for a FOGS Under 20s Cup finals berth but they are yet to hit top form.

The Mustangs made it consecutive wins with a 22-6 victory over Norths at Gold Park on Saturday in the first home game.

That win puts the Mustangs sixth on the ladder, well and truly in finals contention with three more home games to come to close out the regular season.

Qualifying for the colts finals for the first time as the Mustangs or Clydesdales is the aim but focus is being kept on more immediate goals.

“That’s the hope (finals) but we just take it each week as it comes,” Mustangs second-rower Jazz Namana said.

Namana was one of the Mustangs’ try-scorers in the win over Norths, with Jordyn Kuhn crossing for a double while Blake Appo also scored.

Impressively the Mustangs only conceded one try and while pleased with the progress this year Namana thinks there is still work to be done.

“We’re definitely happy with how things have gone,” he said.

“We’re pretty happy with our defence. Our attack, we could work on.”

The Mustangs now host Central Queensland at Gold Park on Sunday.
